White Rice Chaff Ash

Ash permits charcoals and makko trails to breathe from all sides for a complete and uniform burn. This is much more efficient than using sand, salt, or earth; each of which only permit a flow of oxygen from the above the surface.

Ash is ideal for use as a base material to support burning incense sticks, charcoal burning, Kodo ceremony, and makko trail burning. Try using ash to burn cones on. You'll never end up with an unburned chunk of incense like you do with sand. That means less waste. Rope incense can also be laid down horizontally and burned safey on a bed of ash.

Ash is completely reusable and, as you burn incense, adds to itself. This ash is easy to take care of and should provide years of use. Make sure the ash stays ’clean’. Don’t let matches or unburned incense build up in it. Occasionally you should run the ash through a common household flour sifter. This cleans debris from the ash and helps to keep it free flowing.

Over time you may notice that the ash takes on an unpleasant ‘ashy/burned’ smell. Here’s how to take care of that:

Turn your household oven on to 350°F.

• Next, cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Run the ash through a flour sifter onto the foil covered pan to clean out any debris. Then spread the ash over the aluminum foil to a uniform, shallow depth.

• Once the oven has reached 350°F, place the foil covered cookie sheet into the oven to ‘bake’ for 20 minutes. While the ash is baking, thoroughly clean and dry your incense burner.

• Remove the ash from the oven and allow the pan to cool. Refill your burner with the ‘clean’ ash. The odor should be reduced significantly or eliminated completely.
