Shanthimalai Incense is handmade by village women at the foot of the sacred mountain Arunachala in Tamil Nadi, India. A large percentage of the profits from sales of the incense contributes to health care, education, and vocational training for local villagers through Shanthimalai Trust, founded in 1985. Though rich in tradition, the region is outwardly impoverished due to disrupted monsoon patterns and an economy dependent on rice farming. All of the Trust's programs are developed in collaboration with the villagers it serves. A beautiful reciprocal working relationship has now been established with 40 villages. |
Production of incense offers employment for widows, abandoned mothers, and physically handicapped or unmarried women who otherwise would have no means of earning an income. The emotional support these women find in working together is just as important as the financial independence they gain through their work. |
